Urbandale 4th of July Celebration

LOCATION:
Urbandale 4th of July Celebration
Lion’s Park (Next to Olmsted Elementary School)
Urbandale, Iowa 50322
*See the Parks and Recreation of the city of Urbandale (or your local newspaper) for more details on locations and event times.

SPECIAL:
Free Parade
Free Fireworks
Full Service Carnival

REVIEW:
The city of Urbandale has played host to one of the most notable Fourth of July celebrations in the metro area for over 15 years.

Annually held in Lion’s Park across the street from Olmsted Elementary, the entire park is transformed into a carnival courtesy of Sam’s Amusements. Get your corndog, funnel cake, and take a ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl, or Ferris Wheel, all in one prime location.

Start your morning out staking a spot on the parade route which runs the length of Aurora Avenue.  Primo spots are those right in front of Urbandale Middle School.  If you are bringing kids make sure to get them right out front to take part in the candy catching.

4th of July

Lastly end your night with a gorgeous fireworks display, courtesy of the city of Urbandale, at Walker Johnson Park.  Come early as spots fill up fast! Bring a blanket, some bug spray, sit back and enjoy the show. (Keep in mind things can get a little crazy upon exiting the park and be prepared to sit in a small traffic jam.)

Moving On …

Greetings Everyone!

I just wanted to take a minute and touch base as I see this site is pretty regularly visited still. I want to apologize for lack of communication but up until today I was locked out of this account! I got the password reset and I am back on a very “casual” basis.

About two and a half months ago I moved to Dublin, Ireland. With that being said I am not up to date on the goings on in Des Moines, Iowa, but I am willing to keep this blog going with your help.

20150311_173143

Please email me (jbohall_85@yahoo.com) the following details of the event you wish to have published and I will have them added to the site.  I will need the LOCATION of the event (name of the establishment, physical address, phone number, email address *if available, and website *if available), what makes this event SPECIAL” , (cheap drinks, dinner deals, just unique to the city itself), a brief REVIEW of said event (tell me what is going on exactly), and lastly a PHOTO (this can be from a website or something you have taken yourself, if it is a photo you have taken please let me know and I will give you credit on the site in the photo’s caption). Events can be from any time this year, if it is an annual event which has already passed just let me know, we can still let people know for next year!!

Best of Luck everyone, keeping this site alive is up to you now! 🙂

Just across the street from Gray’s Lake off of Fleur, Water Works Park spans a network of over 5 miles worth of inter-winding trails.  Streets for cars as well as paths for bikes, bikers are encouraged to be careful, especially during the busy season.

Me Biking at WW Park

A great place for a picnic, Water Works park is dotted with several picnic areas, some with shelters and all with charcoal grills. Pets are welcome providing they are kept on a leash and all waste is removed from your camp site.

Enjoy fishing?  Whether it is for sport and you catch and throw back, or you enjoy a good fish fry, Water Works Park is covered with many sediment basins full of many varieties of fish from types of Bass to Blue Gill.  Set up a table, bring out your cooler and your fishing pole, sit back relax, and enjoy a good day of fishing from the shore.  Read the area closing regarding park regulations on catch and throw back as well as boats on the water.

Gray's Lake

SPECIAL:
Yoga
Fishing
Boat Rentals
Biking/Walking Trails

REVIEW:
Grays Lake has been a staple for recreation in the Des Moines area for many years. A lake originally dammed from the Raccoon River and a site to some of the most fantastic flooding in the metro area, Gray’s Lake plays host to many outdoor activities in Des Moines.

Interested in taking out a pedal boat or small kayak or canoe? Love biking (or walking) on trails in nature while staying in an urban surrounding? Take a trek around the lake, it is two miles from start to finish! How about yoga?  Take a free yoga class on the shore of the lake on a Saturday morning in the sunshine. I can’t imagine a more relaxing spot.

The lake and river have played host for a family of Bald Eagles for at least 10 years.  Watch for the signs along to trail in order to locate their nests.  Keep in mind they are our national bird, look but do not touch or disturb their habitat.  It is a federal offense.

Sushi Boat

Sushi Boat

 REVIEW:
This is a fairly new sushi establishment to the Des Moines scene, and by new I say only having been around 5 years or so and yet it is amazing how many people have not heard of it or even know where it is! I like very much to call this a hidden gem. With a rather diverse menu it is extremely hard to choose which rolls would best suit you for your dining experience.  I suggest going with a small group of people and basically ordering one of everything.

As you can see about we ordered 6 different rolls between us with charming names such as the “Christmas Roll” and the “Mount Fuji.”  More than enough food to share!  The rolls are rather large so if you are not sure how much you can eat they suggest ordering 2 and if you need your third you are welcome to it, all still for $20.  Keep in mind that any food left over there is a $1 per piece surcharge, so try not to bite off more than you can chew.

*This is my local location but there are others in the Des Moines Area.

SPECIAL:
2 for $20 Menu
Unlimited Fries on Burger Purchases

REVIEW:
Similar to Chili’s (see my previous posting) Applebee’s offers a 2 for $20 menu where you start with an appetizer to share and two full course entrees.  The 2 for $20 options are extremely diverse ranging from sandwiches, ribs, steaks, pastas, and chicken strips with fries.  For a few extra dollars a dessert can be added to your meal. (Ask your server about any possible drink specials going on that night.)

Applebee's

Decide not to go with the 2 for $20 and have a burger instead? Great news!  Burgers now come with all you can eat fries!!

If you are watching your figure Applebee’s is often a healthy dinner choice depending on which items you select.  They are wonderful about posting their nutritional content online, as well as converting some items into Weight Watchers Points for those of you utilizing this program.

Stop in often as their 2 for $20 menu options occasionally change. You may find a new house favorite!

*These are my two favorite locations but there are others.

SPECIAL:
Cheap Breakfast
Fuel Saver Discounts

REVIEW:
For those of you who have been in the Des Moines Area all your lives, you knew Hy-Vee had a cafe, but did you know that almost all of them have upgraded to a full service restaurant?

Opening at 6 AM (9 AM on Sundays) stop in to the nearest Hy-Vee to you and start your morning off right. Most light breakfast items on the “Sunrise Menu” are under $5, this includes the classics such as bacon, eggs, sausage, toast, hash-browns and biscuits & gravy. For just under $7 you can expand your pallet and try an omelet or something a little more hearty.  You’ll never pay those quaint little over priced cafe prices again. (Cost of drinks are extra.)

Hy-Vee

The Hy-Vee on Fleur is a must stop for me when I have an early morning flight out of Des Moines International Airport.  Its a great place to get a reasonable breakfast, fast service, and a meal that will stick with you all day in order to avoid those airline/airport prices later.

Lastly, when finished in the restaurant take a spin around the store.  You never know what may be on fuel saver discount.  For those of you who are not familiar with this program, please check out the website below:

Great Clips

LOCATION:
Great Clips Hair Cut Salon
8537 Hickman Road
Urbandale, Iowa 50322
(515) 278-1301
*This is my local location but there are others.

SPECIAL:
Hair Cut Coupons
Cheap Every Day Specials

REVIEW:
Feeling a little shaggy but sick of paying those high salon prices for just a trim?  I have to admit, my own personally finances changed a few years ago, and a lot of things I took for granted I had to give up.  One of those was my regular trips to the salon. Still, that was no excuse to give up on my beauty needs.

Great Clips offers specials several times a year for hair cuts under $10, or even lower with coupons which typically arrive in the mail with your other weekly shopping ads.

Great Clips

This franchised based chain has multiple locations all over the city, full of trained professionals who have been out of beauty college for five or more years.

While they do not do all over color or highlights, they do offer hair cutting services. Even without a discount the regular price for a women’s haircut is around $15 (less for a man or child).  Never pay $35 for just a haircut again!

Royal Mile

The Royal Mile Pub
210 4th Street
Des Moines, Iowa 50309
(515) 280-3771

SPECIAL:
“Geeks Who Drink”
Trivia every Wednesday night starting at 8 PM upstairs at the Red Monk.
Best Fish and Chips in Des Moines!

REVIEW:
For those of you who are desperate to experience  a little local British culture in an Iowan setting, the Royal Mile Pub is just the place for you.  Pass through the front door straight into London.

With over 20 different kinds of scotch available upon request as well as a large assortment of specialty beers, the Royal Mile (and its sister Belgium themed bar upstairs “The Red Monk”) is a good time to be had by all.  This is my favorite place in town to get a fresh Magners on tap, or if you are feeling really adventurous mix it with Guinness in a drink called a “Black Velvet.”

The Royal Mile isn’t just a great place for a cocktail but their menu is to die for.  Large portions on American dishes with a unique British spin.  I recommend you try some of the following: Ruben Egg Rolls, Fish and Chips, Cornish Pasty, and Sheppard’s Pie Balls!
